Mahershala Ali Becomes First Muslim To Win An Oscar [VIDEO]

Mahershala Ali made history Sunday night becoming the first Muslim actor to win an Academy Award. 

Ali took home the trophy for Best Supporting Actor for his role “Juan” in the film Moonlight, which later took home the win for Best Picture. The win makes him the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar, ever. Ever as in 88 years.

It was also his first time ever being nominated.

“I want to thank my teachers, my professors,” he said. “One thing they consistently told me was that it wasn’t about you. It’s not about you, it’s about these characters, you are a servant. You’re in service to these stories and these characters.”
Ali also won the Screen Actors Guild award for Best Supporting Actor earlier this year.
