Hip-Hop Empire: Fox's New Series and the Bad Boy Days of Hip-Hop
Empire
Empire is the name of Fox's new hip-hop drama series about a music empire. The show stars Terrance Howard and Taraji P. Henson. Empire is Fox's highest-rated show in years.
In the show, Terrence Howard plays Lucious Lyon, a former drug dealer turned hip-hop mogul and the CEO of Empire Entertainment. Taraji P. Henson plays Cookie Lyon, Lucious' ex-wife and mother of his 3 sons. Cookie served a 17 year bid in prison for drug dealing.
Empire For Real
Art imitates life and there are some former/current hip-hop stars that may have been the inspiration for a few of Empire's characters.
Diddy
When you think hip-hop mogul it is difficult to ignore Diddy. In the first scene of the series, Lucious is in the music studio with an aspiring female artist. To motivate her, he states, "I need you to sing like you are going to die tomorrow." A scene that was definitely reminiscent of Diddy coaching Keyshia Cole in the following clip:
There is also the fact that Diddy also has 3 sons. His oldest, Justin, who attended UCLA on a football scholarship and was recently seen challenging Bobby Shmurda:
There is also Diddy's stepson, Quincy, and his youngest Christian:

Lil' Kim
Who would have thought Fox's new series could bring Bad Boy back together? Remember when it was All About the Benjamins? One thing that Lil' Kim does have on Nicki is the fact that she was willing to go down for the people that she cares about. In 2005, Lil' Kim served a yearlong prison sentence for lying to a jury about her friends' involvement in a shooting 4 years earlier. Taraji P. Henson does a magnificent job in her role as Cookie.
Similar to Kim, Cookie was willing to serve time for the people she cared about. Kim was protecting what she felt like Biggie built when she lied about seeing her Junior MAFIA affiliates. She knew Diddy did not need the heat and she is from Brooklyn, NY therefore snitching was not an option. Empire...It truly is all about the Benjamins.
